The mutual fund firm only has the right to purchase and sell shares on your behalf when you invest in one.
It is not the owner of the properties it acquires. All of the investors who put money into the mutual fund are the owners of those funds.
As a result, these properties are handled by a third party known as a custodian.
Custodians are usually trusts, financial institutions such as banks, or other related entities.
